| The Town of Walker is governed by the Lawrason Act, which entitles the Mayor as the
Chief Executive Officer of the Town. The Mayor sets policy and provides leadership,
vision, and direction for the Town Council. The Mayor is also the Town's chief
representative for all economic development projects, interactions among municipal, state and federal agencies, the Town's primary public
relations official and political leaders as well as the chief spokesman for the Town. |
| The Mayor's Office provides general executive and administrative
direction, supervision and support to all departments and agencies of the City.

| The Clerk's Office develops and enhances personnel services and programs and insures
that such complies with federal, state and local laws. The Clerk's Office serves as
the Human Relations Department handling all personnel issues including the preparation of
payroll. |
| The Clerk's Office is responsible for the safe keeping of the official records of the
Town. This includes but is not limited to the minutes
of each council meeting, ordinances, resolutions, contracts and agreements, grant awards
and recordkeeping pertaining to each grant. |
| The Town Clerk assists the Mayor in the preparation of the operating budget and capital
improvement budget. The Town Clerk also serves as the office manager and oversees
the administrative departments. |
| The Department of Finance is responsible for the
sound management of Town finance and property. Departmental duties include administering a
central accounting system for all Town departments, which includes the recordkeeping of
all moneys collected for the Town, disbursement of funds, preparation of monthly
statements of revenues and expenditures, and investment of idle funds.

| The Department of Finance is responsible for the accounts payable
system for payment of materials, supplies and services required by the Town under a
central purchasing system.

The public operations consist of the gas, water, streets and beautification
departments.
| The Gas Department
| The Gas Department is responsible for maintaining and operating a gas system for over
five thousand customers covering 350 miles of main lines. This department is
responsible for the installation of new services and mains and maintaining the lines. |
| The Gas Department is responsible for the operation of twenty two regulator stations and
three major gas taps that supply the gas system which covers over 30 square miles. |

| The Water Department
| The Water Department maintains and operates three water wells with a two hundred and
fifty thousand gallon water tank. This department is responsible for the
installation of new services and mains and maintaining the lines. |
| The Water Department is responsible for maintaining over 3,000 water meters in addition
to twenty five fire hydrants. |

| The Street Department
| The Street Department maintains all asphalt streets and new overlays. This
department is responsible for cleaning storm drains, catch basins, culverts and roadside
ditches. The Street Department also maintains all canals and major drainage arteries
throughout the Town. |
| Weed control and grass cutting in street right of ways are a major undertaking for this
department. Sweeping all street intersections and interstate medians require weekly
attention. The Street Department has over twenty-two miles of streets and right of
ways to maintain. |

| The Wastewater Treatment Department
| The Wastewater treatment department is responsible for maintaining and operating a two
million gallon per day waste water facility. The facility serves over two
thousand customers. This department is responsible for the repair of broken sewer
mains, installation and repair of clean-outs, laterals and the repair and construction of
manholes. |
| The Wastewater department is responsible for maintaining over twenty-seven lift stations
and fifteen miles of sewer mains. This department is responsible for the
installation of new services and mains and maintaining the lines. |

| The Beautification Department
| The Beautification Department works with the Town Council beautification committee in
addition to working with the garden club to help organize and maintain a unique
landscaping concept for the community. All three work hand in hand with new
businesses to insure that the landscaping enhances the proper setting for the Town. |
| The Beautification Department also cleans debris and cuts grass on medians, sidewalks
and in and around flower beds. Maintaining the I-12 landscaping project requires
many hours of hard work and steady maintenance. |

| The Planning Department's primary responsibility is to provide guidance to elected
officials and appointed commissions on growth management issues, including providing clear
vision to help guide Walker's future development. Other issues and responsibilities
include zoning, regulating new subdivisions and subdividing of property. The
Planning and Zoning commission consists of seven commissioners appointed by the Town
Council. This commission devotes many hours to the community for guided development
of the Town's future growth. |
| The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all
park area within the Town limits. This department mows and trims grass, repairs
fences, dugouts, restroom facilities, and parking lots. |
| The Parks Director is responsible for scheduling basketball and baseball activities
within the parks complex. Presently the Town of Walker and the Walker Youth Sports
Association jointly administers the parks programs. |
| The Animal Control department houses and cares for animals picked up by the animal
control officer as well as the animals brought to the shelter by citizens. The
animal control officer enforces the ordinances of the Town related to animal control in
addition to investigation cruelty cases. The animal control officer has the
authority to issue citations and inspect private and commercial kennels within the Town
limits. |
| The Animal Control officer places the abandoned animals in adopted homes and works to
educate the public on safe and humane treatment of animals. The animal control
shelter holds pet adoptions twice a month. |

| The Permit Department is responsible for the enforcement of the Southern Building Code,
the Standard Housing Code, the Standard Mechanical Code, the National Electrical Code, and
the Standard Plumbing and Gas Code. |
| This department is responsible for enforcement of the Town's sign ordinance and various
Town regulations concerning junk, trash, weeds and fencing. Enforcement of the above
codes and ordinances involves an intricate system of permit issuance and inspections by
the building inspector. |
| The Permit Department works to ensure public safety in both private and public
buildings. |
