The Town Council consist of five councilmen who are elected at large within the municipal limits of the Town of Walker.  Each councilman is assigned a commission by the Mayor.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen meet on the second Monday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Walker Town Hall.  The Council follows a regular order of business in the conduct of its meetings.  The agenda is prepared in advance and copies are available from the Clerk's Office the Friday before the meeting. 

The business presented to the Council is disposed of by one of the following actions:

Ordinances
Ordinances are subject to public hearings prior to adoption.  An ordinance must be read by title, notice given by one publication in the official journal of the time and place of public hearing, and laid over for at least seven days from date of publication before final adoption.  No ordinance may be adopted at the same meeting at which it is introduced except emergency legislation.  All ordinances shall be passed in open, public meetings by a vote of a majority of the Council membership.   The Mayor has the power to veto any ordinance adopted by the Council and his veto can be overridden by an affirmative vote of 2/3rds of the Council members.
Resolution
A resolution may be passed expressing the policy of the Council or directing certain types of administrative action.  A resolution may be adopted at the meeting at which it is introduced.
Motions
A motion is ordinarily used to indicate majority approval of a procedural action such as to approve a report or recommendation.  It may also be used to authorize administrative officials to take certain action.
Referral
When the council is not prepared to take definite action or when further study is needs, the Council may refer the matter to the Mayor, City Attorney, an appropritate committee or administrative official for investigation, study and later report.

The council, among other things . . .

adopts and amends city laws.
determines city policies and procedures.
adopts an annual budget that sets the spending limits.
determines what city taxes shall be levied.
approves contracts and agreements
represents the City.
